A 44-year-old man from Gauteng who attacked two security guards and damaged their vehicles was arrested and charged with attempted murder.
Adriaan Petrus van der Westhuizen has appeared in the Ramsgate Court. The case was postponed.
The incident took place in Margate last Saturday at about 6pm after guards were called to apprehend the man who had gotten out of hand at a pub in Uvongo. According to police, the man had threatened pub patrons.
“When one of the security officers arrived, he was allegedly threatened and sworn at by the suspect. The man then left the pub,” said police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.
A second security company officer arrived, but withdrew once they saw that the suspect was leaving. However, the man then apparently followed the guards back to their base in Uvongo.
“He allegedly tried to push them off the road and in the process damaged the two security vehicles as well as an electricity box and a wall of a property,” said Wiid.
During the incident at Uvongo, one of the security officers fired two warning shots.
The suspect was charged and paid R5000 bail on Saturday evening.
Meanwhile one of the patrons in the pub has also opened a common assault case against the man as he alleges that the man had head-butted him during the altercation at the pub.
The man has counter-charged the security officers with attempted murder as he alleges that they followed him and tried to push him off the road and then fired two shots.
